PROFESSIONAL WRITING AND COMMUNICATION IN SCIENCE


This course is addressed to students majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) who want to become more effective at writing and presenting their research. In addition, the rules for clear communication by email, as well as strategies for designing successful job/scholarship applications will be discussed. Therefore, by taking this FREE course you will learn to:

  • Write clear and concise professional emails;

  • Effectively deliver your research results to different types of audiences;

  • Design figures and tables with strong visual impact;

  • Properly quote and cite other authors to avoid plagiarism;

  • Design appealing posters and interesting presentations;

  • Compose successful job and scholarship applications.

The course will be taught in English via Skype on some Saturdays in the afternoon starting October 8, 2016. The tentative schedule of classes is given below:

1.October 8: Importance of Writing and Communication in Science. Writing Professional Emails.
2.October 22: Scientific Writing Basics: Style and Composition.
3.November 5: Providing References and Avoiding Plagiarism.
4.November 19: Designing Eye-Catching Posters and Easy to Follow Presentations.
5.December 3: Applying for a Job: the Dos and Don’ts When Writing a CV or Resume.
6.December 17: Applying for Scholarships and Fellowships: Writing Letters of Recommendation and Cover Letters.

The course instructor, Artur Sargun, is a PhD Student in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. Artur received his Bachelor of Science (2011) and Master of Science (2013) degrees from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Moldova State University.

The one hour sessions will be followed by short assignments that students will have to return within a week by email to moldovaaid@gmail.com. At the end of the course, the trainees who had a good attendance and completed the assigned homeworks will receive a diploma attesting their successful participation.

Hence, we are looking for MOTIVATED STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majoring students that reside in the Republic of Moldova to take this FREE course.
