MASTERING THE CHEMICAL INFORMATION:
FIND THE NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK

This course is designed to address the basic chemical information skills needed for a practicing chemist, or a specialist who will use chemistry in allied fields of science and medicine. Therefore, by taking this FREE course you will learn to:

  • Efficiently locate chemical and physical properties of substances, including spectra;

  • Efficiently locate references for detection, characterization, or reactions, including syntheses, of desired compounds or classes of compounds;

  • Obtain information on a substance through a variety of searching strategies, including structure searching, and searching by molecular formula and name;

  • Complete a comprehensive subject search;

  • Compile a complete bibliography of an author’s publications;

  • Locate recent review articles on a subject;

  • Determine the importance of patents and search for patents on a subject;

  • Use a bibliographic program to organize information and prepare a scientific paper or thesis.

In addition, students taking this course will learn to assess the validity and the quality of the retrieved information, which is a cornerstone skill of chemical information literacy.

The course will be taught in English via Skype on some Saturdays in the afternoon starting October 1, 2016. The tentative schedule of classes is given below:

1.October 1: Structure of Chemical Information. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Sources. Citations and Citation Managers.
2.October 15: Abstracting and Indexing Resources: SciFinder and Free Public Databases.
3.October 29: Formulating an Effective Search Strategy: Searching by Text, Structure, and Citations.
4.November 12: Keeping Track of Current Events: the Nobel Prize in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine. Reading Patents and “Hot” Papers.
5.November 26: Databases of Information: Structure and Sequence Databases. Spectral and Thermodynamic Properties Resources.
6.December 10: The Publication Process: Peer Review, Open Access, Intellectual Property.

The course instructor, Artur Sargun, is a PhD Student in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. Artur received his Bachelor of Science (2011) and Master of Science (2013) degrees from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Moldova State University.

The one hour sessions will be followed by short assignments that students will have to return within a week by email to moldovaaid@gmail.com. At the end of the course, the trainees who had a good attendance and completed the assigned homeworks will receive a diploma attesting their successful participation.

Hence, we are looking for MOTIVATED Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Materials Science majoring students that reside in the Republic of Moldova to take this FREE course.

To apply, please send your Resume and a Letter of Intention to moldovaaid@gmail.com by September 24, 2016. In your Letter of Intention answer in maximum 1 page the following two questions:

1)Why did you choose to pursue a career in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Pharmacy/ Biochemistry/Molecular Biology or Materials Science?

2)What are your short term and long term career goals?

You will be notified by September 28 if you are selected.
